HEARTH & GARDEN

This BEN FRANKLIN SOCIETY Project, managed by Dr. Peggy McGhee, is our Society’s initiative to create a new Franklin County historic and educational resource for tourists visiting the Piedmont of North Carolina.

Our HEARTH & GARDEN provides, on an appointment-basis, a unique historic, educational and culinary experience, where visitors can sample authentic foods with ingredients sourced from the GARDEN and cooked in a traditional wood-fired, open HEARTH kitchen.

The GARDEN grows vegetables and herbs documented to have been prevalent in the Piedmont during the early 1800’s.

Peggy’s Open HEARTH is a replica of one in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. Peggy’s cooking utensils are antiques collected over the past 40 years that date back into the 1700’s.

The recipes that Peggy prepares are from documented sources dating from the 1747 Hannah Glasse book ‘The Art of Cookery, Made Plain and Easy’.

The following Promotional Video, presently hosted on YouTUBE, describes our objectives and the essence of your educational experience.

We expect to begin accepting reservations in the Summer of 2015. You may contact Dr. Peggy McGhee at her email address pwmkitchen@gmail.com
