KITCHEN GARDEN

This BEN FRANKLIN SOCIETY Project is managed by Kerry Carter and is located on The McGhee Farm in Franklinton, NC which serves as an alternate Event hosting-site to our headquarters at the Lynch Creek Farm Cabin and Grounds.

This Kitchen GARDEN was created by the Society to complement Peggy’s OPEN HEARTH and initially serve as an educational learning station at the BFS Colonial Hearth Day(s) held each fall for the Franklin County School System – disadvantaged 4th Grade Elementary School students.

Ben Franklin Society funds to build the GARDEN were augmented by Grants received from local Sponsors: United Way of Franklin County, Novozymes and the Tourism Development Authority of Franklin County.

We now are beginning to promote the HEARTH & GARDEN as a new year-round tourist attraction, by appointment, for small groups (less than 20) independent of the School System.

You can download Marion Blackburn’s PERSPECTIVE ARTICLE titled “Sowing Seeds, Growing History” about Peggy McGhee’s Kitchen Garden.

The photos below convey how we began building the GARDEN in 2012.
